Marshmallow started in 2019 as three people who kept being hired separately for the same project and having to reintroduce the argument each time. The studio exists so that brand, product and build sit in one conversation.
We have stayed at eleven on purpose. Two projects run at a time, never three. Everyone who presents work made some of it, and there is nobody here whose only job is to be in the meeting.

Four designers
Two lean brand, two lean product, all four can hold a type system. They rotate between projects so nobody becomes the only person who understands a client.
Three design engineers
They sit in the design reviews, not next to them. Anything drawn gets pressure-tested in a browser the same week, which is where most of our better ideas actually come from.
Two writers
Naming, voice, interface copy, error states. Words are drawn at the same time as the layout — never poured into it afterwards.
One producer
Scheduling, budgets, and the person who tells us when a project is done. Every studio needs exactly one of these and no more.
One motion lead
Owns the easing curves, the reduced-motion behaviour and the argument about whether a transition is carrying meaning or just spending time.
A rotating desk
One seat kept free for a six-month residency — a photographer, an illustrator, a typeface designer. It is the cheapest way we know to stop sounding like ourselves.
We will not ship a screen we have not seen on a bad phone on a bad connection. House rule, pinned by the door
Placeholder people
No invented testimonials, no borrowed logos, no numbers we cannot source. An empty social-proof slot with a note in it is more honest than a grid of fiction, and clients keep thanking us for it.
Motion for its own sake
Everything that moves here is doing a job: showing state, showing structure, or covering a page change. All of it is switched off under prefers-reduced-motion, and none of it hides content.
Assets we did not make
The six loops on this site are metaball fields rendered by a Python script in this repository — about a megabyte in total, seamless by construction, and re-renderable at any size. No stock footage, no CDN.
